What is PRI(Postural Restoration Institute)

For those of you who are current or prior clients of FuncPhysio, you may hear “neutrality”, “patterned”, “pathological pattern”,  “Left AIC pattern”, ”Right BC pattern”, ”Right TMCC pattern”, “Superior T4”, “PEC pattern”, “Cranial Left side bending”, and “Right torsion.” These terms describe your system in Postural Restoration Institute® aka PRI

The human body is not symmetrical. The neurological, respiratory, circulatory, muscular, and vision systems are not the same on the left side of the body as they are on the right, and vice versa. They have different responsibilities, functions, positions, and demands on them. This system asymmetry is a good thing and an amazing design. The human body is balanced through the integration of system imbalances.

Vision, occlusion, hearing, foot pressure, occupational demands, in-uterine position, etc. can all influence asymmetrical tendencies and patterns. PRI recognizes the more common integrated patterns of human stance, extremity use, respiratory function, vestibular imbalance, mandibular orientation, and foot dynamics; and balances these patterns, as much as possible through specific exercise techniques that integrate correct respiration with the left side or right side inhibitory or facilitatory function. (Quoted from PRI website: www.posturalrestoration.com).

Dr.Takada understands asymmetrical demands on a body which may cause movement dysfunctions, postural compensation, musculoskeletal pain, as well as autonomic nervous system disturbances. Dr.Takada works with a multidisciplinary team including, but not limited to, dentists, optometrists, podiatrists, myofunctional therapists, and training professionals to provide holistic treatment. He is a certified PRI practitioner in New York City. Dr.Takada also started to see patients in Dallas, TX area (North Dallas).

Dr. Takada’s comment on PRI

With the many years of my journey as a physical therapist, I have learned so many theories and concepts. I studied physical therapy science at Columbia University, went a post-doctoral training for two years at Touro College, called the Orthopedic Residency program, and have taken more than a hundred post-doctoral continuing education courses from different institutes. However, PRI is different from a traditional physical therapy approach.

With Ron Hruska at PRI in Lincoln, NE

At the beginning of my career, I have to say that I focused on very specific things, like muscles, fascia, ligaments, joints, and nerves. And I tried to be a specialist like an Orthopedic specialist, Sports Specialist, Manual therapy specialist, Shoulder specialist, and so on. However, I could not see the whole picture of the system. Although I understood the cause of the lower back pain and I was able to provide treatment for the symptom, I could not see the whole picture of the system beyond orthopedic issues and how the entire system is affected each other, like why your teeth (occlusion) are important for your lumbar spine, why your feet are important for your Temporomandibular joint (TMJ), why your vision affect your posture, and why your personality affect your pelvis until I met Ron and study PRI.

PRI is ultimately a “scientifically proven holistic treatment” approach.

Studying PRI was challenging because I had never been exposed to the concepts in the physical therapy program or continuing education courses. As the journey of PRI, I started to see the entire picture of the system. Then, I saw amazing results and was so fascinated by PRI. Incorporating with other specialists such as dentists, optometrists, audiologists, and podiatrists also gave me provide the next level of treatment to complicated patients who I could not help before. Giving a canine contact eliminates hip pain, changing eyeglasses helps back pain, and giving a shoe insert helps ear ringing. These are examples of holistic and interdisciplinary PRI approaches.  Ron is brilliant at scientifically explaining the human system and sharing his knowledge through PRI.

The PRI is located in Lincoln, Nebraska, founded by a physical therapist, Ron Hruska.
