Whether it\u2019s from sitting too long at work, lifting something heavy, or simply waking up one morning with stiffness, back pain affects millions of people each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the pain becomes severe or persistent, many people turn to doctors for help and are often sent for diagnostic imaging such as X-rays or MRI scans. The thinking is: <em>If we can see what\u2019s inside, we\u2019ll know exactly what\u2019s wrong.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there\u2019s a big problem with this assumption\u2014<strong>imaging does not tell the whole story about your back pain.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-imaging-isn-t-always-the-answer\"><strong>Why Imaging Isn\u2019t Always the Answer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Research shows that nearly <strong>90% of low back pain cases are classified as non-specific low back pain<\/strong>, meaning that medical imaging cannot identify the exact cause. In these cases, the pain is not clearly linked to a fracture, infection, tumor, or other serious condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even more surprising is that <strong>many people without back pain at all have \u201cabnormal\u201d findings on an MRI<\/strong>. For example:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Disc bulges<\/strong> are present in more than 50% (up to 90%) of people over age 60.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Arthritic changes<\/strong> in the facet joints are common as part of normal aging.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Degenerative disc disease<\/strong> often appears on imaging even when there are no symptoms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/funcphysio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2025\/09\/269E3BAE-751F-498C-BF60-8FBA71A6A583.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10307\" style=\"width:275px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/funcphysio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/269E3BAE-751F-498C-BF60-8FBA71A6A583.png 1024w, https:\/\/funcphysio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/269E3BAE-751F-498C-BF60-8FBA71A6A583-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/funcphysio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/269E3BAE-751F-498C-BF60-8FBA71A6A583-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, seeing a disc bulge or arthritis on an MRI does not automatically mean that\u2019s the cause of your pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-symptom-imaging-mismatch\"><strong>The Symptom\u2013Imaging Mismatch<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This mismatch between imaging results and actual symptoms is well documented.
