Integrating Japanese Eastern medicine with Western medicine.

In September, Dr. Kosaki had the opportunity to provide two health seminars in collaboration with the Japanese American Association (JAA) in New York.

The two seminars focused on different stages of life and different aspects of physical health: children’s development through play and movement, and posture and movement strategies to help protect the knees and lower back.

Seminar 1: “Play” and Development for Children

The first seminar was an online presentation focused on children and their development.

The seminar, titled Modern Children Need ‘Play’ and ‘Development’, was designed for parents and caregivers who are interested in supporting healthy development through movement and play.

The presentation covered topics such as:

  • How play can influence children’s development
  • Different types of play that support development
  • How parents can encourage movement and development at home
  • Common concerns such as difficulty with exercise, limited attention, running, and posture

As a physical therapist, I discussed how everyday movement and physical activity can contribute to children’s physical development and provided practical ideas that families can incorporate into their daily routines.

Seminar 2: Posture to Protect Your Knees and Lower Back

The second seminar focused on posture and musculoskeletal health.

The presentation, Posture to Protect Your Legs and Lower Back, introduced participants to the relationship between posture, joint movement, and everyday physical stress.

We discussed:

  • What good posture means
  • How poor posture can affect the joints
  • Why abnormal joint loading can contribute to discomfort
  • How posture and movement patterns may relate to knee and lower back problems
  • How to find a comfortable and sustainable posture for your own body

Rather than simply telling participants to “sit up straight” or maintain one perfect posture, the goal was to help them understand how their bodies move and how to find a posture that works for them.

Participants also had the opportunity to experience practical movement exercises during the seminar.

More JAA Health Seminars Coming in Spring 2027

Following the positive response to these seminars, FuncPhysio will continue collaborating with JAA and plans to offer additional health seminars in spring 2027.

We look forward to continuing to provide practical information about posture, movement, exercise, injury prevention, and physical health to the Japanese community in New York.
