Body Management After 40: Movement and Nutrition for Healthy Aging

Last weekend, FuncPhysio Physical Therapy hosted a special collaborative event with My Happy Tummy Club, focusing on body management after your 40s. The event brought together movement education and nutrition guidance, creating a practical and enjoyable learning experience for everyone who joined.

We were happy to welcome 12 participants, and the room was filled with great energy, curiosity, and thoughtful questions. It was clear that many people are eager to understand how their bodies change with age, and more importantly, what they can do about it.

How the Body Changes After 40

During the event, I discussed how the body naturally changes as we age, especially after our 40s. Common changes include:

  • Decreased muscle mass and strength
  • Reduced joint mobility and flexibility
  • Slower recovery from exercise or daily stress
  • Changes in function of gastrointestinal organs

These changes are normal, but they are not a reason to stop moving. Instead, they highlight the importance of choosing the right type of movement at the right time.

Exercise Has Different Types

I introduced different types of exercise and explained how each plays a role in long-term body health:

  • Mobility exercises: used active stretching for hamstrings to gain immediate results
  • Proper movements: proper posture and form are extremely important especially if you do not exercise regularly. Introduced appropriate standing posture and squats.
  • Interval training: it is one of the most effective types of the training to improve metabolism. 2 minutes of interval training increased heart rates and provide training effect.

Rather than pushing intensity, we emphasized quality of movement, body awareness, and consistency. Participants were able to watch live demonstrations and feel how small changes in form and intention can make a big difference.

Nutrition for Aging Well – Talk by Ms. Sorimachi

Ms. Sorimachi from My Happy Tummy Club shared valuable insights on how eating habits should adapt as we age. She explained:

  • Changes in digestive function as we age
  • How to calculate intakes of total calories, carbohydrates, and protein
  • The importance of mindful eating rather than strict dieting

During her talk, participants was enjoying a thoughtfully prepared meal from Happy Tummy, allowing everyone to experience how nourishing food can be both healthy and satisfying. This combination of education and real food made the message very tangible.

A Holistic Approach to Health After 40

One of the key messages of the event was that movement and nutrition must work together. Exercise alone is not enough, and neither is diet alone. By combining:

  • Smart, individualized movement
  • Education about body changes
  • Supportive, gut-friendly nutrition

we can build a sustainable approach to aging that keeps people active, confident, and pain-free.
