Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) is a rehabilitation and performance approach developed from developmental kinesiology. 1. Returning to Your Natural Movement Blueprint
Every healthy infant develops movement through predictable stages—lifting the head, rolling, crawling, sitting, standing, and eventually walking. During this process, the nervous system naturally learns how to stabilize the spine, coordinate breathing, and move efficiently.
As adults, however, years of repetitive sports, prolonged sitting, previous injuries, or poor movement habits can gradually alter these natural patterns.
DNS aims to restore these fundamental movement strategies, helping athletes build a stronger foundation before adding speed, strength, or power.
2. A Strong Core Is More Than Strong Abs
In DNS, core stability isn’t about six-pack muscles—it’s about creating a stable foundation for movement.
Your diaphragm, abdominal muscles, pelvic floor, and deep spinal stabilizers work together to create intra-abdominal pressure (IAP), forming a naturally pressurized cylinder that supports the spine during movement.
When this system functions well, athletes can:
- Transfer force more efficiently
- Generate greater power
- Improve balance and stability
- Reduce unnecessary stress on the spine and surrounding joints
When core pressure isn’t properly maintained, athletes often compensate with excessive arching of the lower back, rib flaring, or overusing superficial muscles. Over time, these compensations may contribute to decreased performance and increased injury risk.
3. Better Joint Position = Better Performance
Another key DNS principle is functional joint centration.
This refers to maintaining optimal alignment between joint surfaces while moving. When joints stay well-centered, forces are distributed more evenly throughout the body, allowing muscles to work efficiently while reducing stress on ligaments, cartilage, and other passive tissues.
Poor joint control may not cause immediate pain, but over time it can contribute to common sports injuries involving the shoulders, hips, knees, and lower back.
4. How DNS Benefits Different Athletes
Runners
Efficient running requires more than cardiovascular fitness. DNS helps runners improve trunk stability, hip control, and foot strike mechanics, leading to smoother force transfer and potentially reducing excessive stress on the knees and lower back.
Basketball Players
Basketball demands rapid acceleration, deceleration, jumping, landing, and cutting. DNS improves the body’s ability to maintain trunk stability during these explosive movements, helping athletes produce force more efficiently while improving landing mechanics.
Golfers and Rotational Sports
Sports like golf, tennis, baseball, and pickleball require powerful rotational movements. DNS emphasizes generating rotation from the hips and trunk while maintaining shoulder stability, allowing athletes to improve power transfer while minimizing unnecessary strain on the spine and shoulders.
Climbers
Climbing requires exceptional body awareness, shoulder stability, and efficient force transfer between the upper and lower body. DNS helps climbers develop better scapular control, trunk stability, and coordination, improving movement efficiency on the wall while reducing excessive stress on the shoulders and elbows.

Whether you’re squatting, deadlifting, or performing Olympic lifts, generating force begins with a stable trunk. DNS helps athletes develop better breathing mechanics and intra-abdominal pressure, providing a stronger foundation for lifting heavier loads with improved movement quality.
5. Improving Movement Under Fatigue
Many injuries don’t occur because an athlete lacks strength—they occur when fatigue causes movement quality to deteriorate.
As the body becomes tired, the nervous system may rely on less efficient compensation strategies, resulting in poor mechanics and increased stress on joints and soft tissues.
DNS training helps improve motor control and movement efficiency, allowing athletes to maintain better stability and coordination even during demanding training or competition.
What Does a DNS Training Session Look Like?
DNS can be integrated into almost any rehabilitation or training program, including strength training, running, Pilates, yoga, or sport-specific conditioning.
A typical session may include:
- Developmental movement positions such as the 3-Month Supine, Bear Position, or Quadruped
- Breathing and core pressure training
- Movement quality and motor control exercises
- Sport-specific integration based on your individual goals and movement demands
