When you watch professional marathon runners, you may notice that everyone has a slightly different running style. Some runners have a longer stride, some have a higher cadence, and some look very different in their posture and arm movement. You may have experienced being passed by another runner during a race, even though their running form looked terrible.
There is no single “perfect” running form that works for everyone.
However, there are some important movement principles that can help you run more efficiently, reduce unnecessary fatigue, and improve your performance.
Here are 3 running mechanics tips that may help you become a better runner.
1. Push Your Leg Back — Don’t Rely Only on Your Calves
Many runners focus on pushing off with their feet, but effective propulsion does not come only from the ankle.
If you rely too much on your ankle to push off, your calf muscles have to work harder and may fatigue quickly. This is especially common in runners who experience frequent calf tightness or cramping during longer runs.
A more efficient push-off comes from using your hip muscles, especially your glutes.
Your glute muscles are powerful muscles designed to create forward movement. When your hips contribute properly, your calves do not have to do all the work.

How to improve your push-off:
- Improve hip mobility with hip flexor stretching
- Strengthen your glutes with exercises such as bridges, squats, and single-leg exercises

2. Bring Your Knee Forward During the Swing Phase
You may have heard the running cue:
“Land underneath your body.”
This is an important concept for efficient running. Landing closer to your center of mass can help reduce excessive braking forces and improve running efficiency.
However, some runners misunderstand this cue and try to keep their leg too close to their body before landing. They focus so much on landing underneath themselves that they limit their natural forward leg swing.
Even though your foot should land underneath your body, your knee still needs to travel forward during the swing phase before your foot contacts the ground.
Efficient running requires a smooth transition:
push off → swing your leg forward → land underneath your body → transition into the next step
How to improve your swing phase:
- Activate your hip flexors and abdominal muscles
- Practice quick ground contact:
- As soon as your foot lands, think about lifting it back into the swing phase

3. Use Your Upper Body to Create More Running Power
Many runners think arm movement is not as important. However, your upper body plays an important role in running efficiency.
A common pattern we see is runners swinging their arms mainly from the shoulder joint without much movement from the trunk. This limits the amount of force they can create.
Your trunk and pelvis are connected to your lower body through your core muscles. When you use rotation through your upper trunk, you can create a stronger and more efficient arm swing.
Think about your belly button area as the center of your movement. Better trunk rotation can help transfer energy through your body and support your running rhythm.

- Single-arm rows to improve trunk control and rotation

A better arm swing is not about moving your arms harder — it is about connecting your whole body together.
