Have you ever thought about starting running but didn’t know where to begin?

Many people want to start exercising, improve their fitness, or become runners, but the first step can feel challenging. Common questions we hear are:

“Where should I start?”
“How much should I run?”
“How can I avoid getting injured?”
“How can I stay consistent?”

At FuncPhysio Physical Therapy, we started our first Couch to 5K Program in June to help beginners build confidence, improve physical fitness, and safely complete their first 5km run.

What is Couch to 5K?

Couch to 5K is an 8-week exercise program designed for people who want to start running from the beginning.

The goal is simple:

Move your body consistently and gradually build the ability to run 5km.

For beginner runners, completing 5km usually takes about 30–40 minutes. Instead of focusing only on running distance or speed, our program focuses on helping participants develop the strength, coordination, and endurance needed to keep moving for 30 minutes.

Why Do Many People Struggle to Start Running?

Running looks simple, but starting a new exercise routine can be difficult.

Some people start running too quickly without preparing their body, which can increase the risk of pain or injury. Others feel overwhelmed because they do not have a clear plan or someone to support their progress.

A successful running journey is not only about running more miles. It is about building a strong foundation and creating a habit that can continue long-term.

A Complete Exercise Program for Running Performance

At FuncPhysio, our Couch to 5K Program includes more than just running. We include whole-body exercises that help prepare the body for running, such as:

  • Stretching
  • Squats
  • Partial push-ups
  • Planks
  • Jumping exercises
  • Hopping exercises
  • Strength and movement training

Running requires the whole body to work together. Improving strength, balance, and movement control can help participants run more efficiently and reduce unnecessary stress on the body.

As physical therapists, we focus not only on completing the 5km goal but also on helping participants develop better movement habits for a healthier and more sustainable exercise routine.

The Goal: Keep Moving for 30 Minutes

The biggest goal of this program is to “keep moving for 30 minutes”. You do not need to be a runner before joining. You do not need to run fast. It is okay to walk in the middle of the 5km running.

The goal is to gradually increase your ability to move your body for 30 minutes.

By building small successes each week, participants can gain confidence and make exercise a regular part of their lifestyle.

Our First Couch to 5K Program Started in June!

Our June–July Couch to 5K Program has already reached full capacity!

We are excited to see our participants challenge themselves, build new habits, and take their first steps toward becoming runners.

Registration for our next Couch to 5K Program (August–September) will open in July.

If you have been thinking:

“I want to start running, but I don’t know how…”

This program may be the perfect first step.
