
Did you know your internal organs are constantly moving?
Every time you take a breath, your diaphragm descends and your organs must glide, slide, and adapt to make room.
In fact, this movement occurs thousands of times each day.

What Is a Visceral Restriction?
A visceral restriction occurs when an organ or its surrounding connective tissues lose their normal mobility.
This may occur following:

- Repetitive stress
- Chronic postural adaptations
- Scar tissue formation
When an organ loses mobility, the effects may extend beyond the organ itself.
Potential Consequences of a Visceral Restriction
1. Altered Motion
Rather than moving through its normal range, the organ begins adapting around the restricted area.
Over time, this altered movement pattern may create abnormal mechanical stresses throughout the body.

2. Functional Impairment
For hollow organs such as the stomach, intestines, bladder, and colon, mobility is an important component of normal function.
Restrictions may influence:

- Elimination
- Pressure regulation

3. Vascular and Lymphatic Congestion
Normal tissue mobility helps support circulation and fluid exchange.
When tissues become restricted, vascular and lymphatic flow may become less efficient, potentially contributing to congestion and reduced tissue health.

4. Irritation and Protective Spasm
Abnormal mechanical forces can place stress on tissues and surrounding structures.
Over time, the body may respond with protective tension, irritation, or viscerospasm.

5. Neurological Stress
Visceral tissues contain a rich network of sensory receptors.
Restricted tissues continually send sensory and proprioceptive information to the nervous system, which may contribute to ongoing protective responses and altered movement patterns.

6. Musculoskeletal Dysfunction
The body functions as an interconnected system.
A visceral restriction may contribute to pain, stiffness, or movement limitations in areas seemingly unrelated to the involved organ.
For some individuals, unresolved visceral restrictions may play a role in persistent musculoskeletal complaints that have not fully responded to traditional orthopedic treatment approaches.

How Can These Restrictions Be Addressed?
Visceral Manipulation (VM) is an organ-specific fascial mobilization approach developed by French osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral.
